Frequently Asked Questions
Triennial literally means “three years.” The term is generally applied to a formal assembly that occurs once every three years. Within the York Rite, several of the General Grand Bodies hold their own Triennial sessions.
The General Grand Council of Cryptic Masons International holds a Triennial Assembly, which brings together Companions from throughout its jurisdiction and around the world into one great gathering. It is held once every three years. The General Grand Council was formed in 1881 and has held triennial meetings since that date, with the exception of the year 1945 when none was held; this was adjusted by holding the meeting in 1946 and again in 1948.
The General Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons International also holds a Triennial Convocation once every three years. The General Grand Chapter and General Grand Council have been holding their Triennials together at the same time and place, allowing Royal Arch and Cryptic Masons from across the world to gather for their respective General Grand Sessions during the same event. Responsibility for selecting the location alternates between the General Grand Chapter and General Grand Council from one Triennial to the next, with the General Grand High Priest selecting the location when it is the General Grand Chapter's turn and the General Grand Master selecting the location when it is the General Grand Council's turn.
The Grand Encampment of Knights Templar of the United States of America likewise holds a Triennial Conclave every three years. Its Triennial is a separate gathering and is not currently held in conjunction with the Triennials of the General Grand Chapter and General Grand Council.
The term “triennial” is sometimes applied to the three-year period between these gatherings, although when used in that sense, the proper word is “triennium.” A Triennial is the session or gathering itself; a triennium is the three-year period between Triennial sessions.
